BIOGRAPHY

SELF PORTRAIT  2022

Thank you for visiting and for your interest in viewing my work. I have loved every minute of making these images, often not knowing exactly what the end result may turn out to be, serendipity and pareidolia are great allies.
The starting point of learning photography itself was serendipitous. My secondary school chemistry teacher 'Doc' Marchant made a small darkroom in the chemistry lab, for those interested in joining his after school photography club. As my first black and white print magically appeared in the developing tray I was hooked then and there.
A successful photography career spanning decades followed after High School, short stints assisting, and a year as a medical and biological photographer at a Ministry of Agriculture unit in New Zealand. Returning to the UK and going freelance I specialised in advertising commissions shooting food, roomsets, and still life with a little industrial and editorial work thrown in.
When analogue gave way to digital workflows I relived that initial darkroom magic  and wonder; the developer now a keyboard controlling software, the paper now a screen. A new exciting era of image making.
Semi retiring gave time to enjoy the creative freedom of making my own personal narratives. It took some time to excise the advertising, commercial way of visualising but finally with re calibrating I am comfortable rebranding myself as an 'artist'.  (the irony of using the term 'rebranding' is not lost on me.)
I am interested in ecology and social issues and try to communicate some element of either. Inspiration for new projects is often suggested from seeing landscapes, portraits and things randomly presented in textures, crumblings and stains on walls. Taking this lead as my starting point and the concept 'The Writing Is On The Wall' the initial visions are developed and honed until the final stories are exposed.
Once again thank you for your interest, new work has its first airing in my Instagram account; I would be more than delighted if you followed me there:
