Trees appear to communicate with each other via fungal networks to combat threats, nicknamed by researchers the 'wood wide web'. By sharing information and resources the older trees are enabled to give special attention to their offspring and young saplings. Nutrients and water are distributed via the fungal filaments (mycorrhizae) that connect their roots. The fungus is is rewarded, for the information channels, by the supply of plentiful nutrients. There is much research to be done on this subject as this type of communication is little understood.
Uncovering a pile of damp rotting pine planks I discovered myriads of intricate fronds of fungus entwined around the wood. Each fungus laden layer resembled diminutive forests. By merging images of pine trees with the fungus photographs I set about exploring the resemblances between the trees and their symbiotic partner; together revealing re-imagined surreal forest landscapes, celebrating the cooperative ecosystem.

FOREST 01 in series  The “Wood Wide Web” refers to the underground network of roots and fungi that connect trees in a symbiotic relationship allowing them to communicate, share nutrients, and support each other, fostering a cooperative ecosystem. We could learn from this. Wood fungus entwined over pine planks with three pine tree photographs added to left hand side. together an illusion of a forest is created. Red and orange coloured fungus gives an impression of fire at the bottom of the image.
